Actually… no. The “Schmetter-” part rather comes from an old word “Schmetten”, meaning “cream” (cognate to German “Schmand”), which means the idea behind it is similar to the one behind the English “butter-fly”. The “-ling” part can be diminuitive, but in this case, it simply indicates a noun with a certain quality, similar to “Frühling” indicating the earliest of the seasons, coming from the word “früh” (early).
